I love the symbol and concept of Yin/Yang that recognizes that there are two sides to everything and acknowleges the presence of the opposite in the other side with that little speck of the other's quality, holistically viewing truth as having multiple aspects. I think that's sooo wise.

With many with strong and warrior-like attitudes that seem to love to engage in take-no-prisoner arguments, they fail to recognize or respect any views other than their own. This kind of mindset is what leads to the dualistic world we live in of black and white values without a clue about the need to consider things more carefully than hard and fast opinions that may or may not be worthy.

As Good is a value judgement and what is sauce for some is anathema for others, esp in religious fundamentalism and political ultra conservatives we need to be cautiously aware of our value judgments. There also seems a virulent strain of an intoxication with antisocial cruelty who seem to carry around a smoldering fury, beyond shadenfruede to actual wishing and inflicting harm to any who are in any way opposed to their values. The downside of the totally diverse populations now existant in sizable cities is this diversity of opinion of right and wrong, good and unacceptable. We humans need to learn to be more tolerant of differences and the respect of others differentd from ourselves, short of committing crimes against humanity and human rights. True religions promulgate peace and peaceable coexistence and we can expect perpetuation of hateful practices and thinking if preaching of hate continues.

Nice post Jeff. Dewey fascinates me and I appreciate your touching on his views so simply. From what little I know of him I really like how grounded in experimentalism and non-dualism he was.
How did New York go?
